The Tiger-Seat Bird-Frame Bronze Drum was excavated in 2002 from Jiuliandun Tomb M2, Zaoyang, Hubei Province. Measuring 135.9 cm in total height and 134 cm in width, it is supported by two crouching tigers with raised heads, curled tails and limbs tucked beneath their bodies, seated back to back. Upon the back of each tiger stands a long-legged phoenix with its head held high and beak open as if singing. Between the two phoenixes standing back to back, a large drum is suspended from their crests. Two small animals, with their hind feet on the back of the phoenix, support the drum body with their front feet. The entire object is coated in black lacquer, adorned with vibrant red and yellow paintings, showcasing the romance and magic of Chu culture.
